Intricacy: A Literary Review

We started Intricacy: A Literary Review because we admire writing that seeks to unravel and examine the beautiful, difficult, and messy aspects of life. Rather than neat and tidy conclusions, we prefer work that offers opportunities for reflection and inquiry, words that linger with us long after the last line. And, as voracious readers ourselves, we also wish to curate issues that entrance and challenge a wide variety of readers.

This magazine was launched in 2025 and our inaugural issue was published in summer 2026.

Our Origin Story

We like thematic and formal intricacy. For us, intricate writing is literary and lovely even when dealing with sad and ugly truths; work in which the precision, creativity, and experimentation put into crafting the language is undeniable and in which the attempt to provide insights about life is delicately woven. Like lace, where each stitch is carefully crafted, aesthetically pleasing, and serves a specific purpose, intricate writing is not superfluous but is a complete, complex, and captivating composition.

Sarah J. Wilhoit is an Assistant Professor of English and writer living in the Southwest with her partner and myriad pets. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in literature from the University of Arizona and adores bold and imaginative writing. She also has a soft spot for morally grey characters.

Sovay Muriel Hansen is an editor, writer, and literary critic. She has a Ph.D. in literature with a minor in German studies. Sovay loves writing that is spare—yet still etches itself into you; and she’s fascinated with metonymy. Sovay is editor-in-chief of DesertLeaf, a culture and arts magazine that’s been in print in Tucson, AZ, for nearly 40 years.
